I talk to a lot of people on a daily basis and a question that I come across from small business owners is why they need human resources. Call it what you want, personnel support, HR, human resources, the evil department that fires people, or anything else. It doesn’t matter what you call but the fact of the matter is you need it! You need some sort of support to help increase your return on investment of your employees. Not every company needs a person or department dedicated solely to this business function, but you need a support system of some type.
Here are some reasons why:
1) Creation and maintenance of policies & procedures
2) Administration of new hire paperwork, benefits, & payroll
3) Coordination of training, job descriptions, etc.
4) Ensuring your company is compliant with state and federal laws
Big picture the purpose of human resources is to ensure a return on investment of your employees. The method you choose to integrate it into your company is what works best for you. You could choose to use a workforce management partner, payroll service, create a department of one, or use someone inside your organization to wear “the hat.”
It may take a little getting used to but it is better to do it now before you receive a lawsuit for wrongful termination or fines for violating wage and hour laws.
Has your Employee Handbook been reviewed in the last 6 months?
Do you have all appropriate new hire forms required both by federal and state statutes?
If you answered “No” to either of these questions you could be exposing yourself to RISK!
